Bruce Akers

Our Father, Bruce Akers, passed away on August 10, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio with his children by his side. In our time of mourning, we reflect upon his life and the impact he leaves not only on us, but to all his friends and family. Dad was a member of the Dorton Old Regular Church and a retired coal miner. He loved going to church not only for his love of God, but for his love of all his brothers and sisters of the church. Always the first to show up and, in fact, they gave him a key so he could open the church. Dad was born March 9, 1947, to the late Elder Frank Akers and Melvira (Mellie) Tackett Akers. His parents taught their children to put God and love first in their lives. On January 18, 1969 he married our Mother, Virginia Fay Wright, who he lovingly called Jenny Fay, in Clintwood, Va. Into this union was born three children: Cathy Sue (Sean Thomas) Clay of Ewing, KY, Lucy Renee Akers, (passed at only eight months old), and Walter Thomas (Julia Kay) Akers of Covington, Ky. After 27 years of marriage, Jenny was called home by our Lord. He was preceded in death by three brothers and 7 sisters: Truman, James, Carl, Gladys, Ruth Elizabeth, Lois, Joyce, Doris, Lucinda, and Barbara Kay. He leaves behind two brothers and two sisters. Clearance (Carol) Akers of Dorton, Ky, Paul Akers of Dorton, Kentucky, Betty Lou Hall of Dorton, Ky, and Wanda (John) Bailey of Barboursville, WV. He also is survived by his sister-in-law Sue Akers of Busy, Ky and a brother-in-law Dr Bill Collins of Whitesburg, KY. Dad leaves behind four grandchildren: Lauren Nicole Jenkins, Bethany Paige Rudd, Michael Alexander Akers, and Hayden Joshua Akers. There are seven great grandchildren: Noah, Ariel, Blair, Colby, Judd, Ripp, and Daphene. In his later years, these children would bring him so much love and enjoyment when he needed it the most. Anyone that knew Dad would agree on two traits. He could be the most stubborn man you ever met, and he loved the rewards of a hard day's work. If he didn't want to do something, he would buck up unlike any man we ever met. He was also the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. As we lay him to rest, our hearts are heavy, and he will be missed. Our hope is that his friends and family can take comfort in knowing he lived a full life and lived it his way. Thanks Dad for everything and may the Lord welcome you into the Kingdom of Heaven. Funeral services will be held at 10AM Thursday at the Dorton Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Osborne Cemetery at Dorton. Visitation will begin after 6PM Tuesday at the Dorton Old Regular Baptist Church with services beginning nightly at 7PM.
