Gary Paul Anderson

Gary Paul Anderson, 75 years of age of Virgie passed away Friday, July 5, 2019 at his home. He was born on November 1, 1943 to the late Eugene Anderson and Ruth Branham Anderson Velat. He was a member of the Virgie Baptist Church, a Veteran of the US Army, having served three years. He had worked as a policeman and detective for the city of High Point, NC and was named Policeman of the Year for bravery and public service. He returned to Kentucky in 1971 to raise his family. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and Pikeville College, where he worked as an Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Affairs. He was also employed by the Pike County Fiscal Court and headed various departments during his tenure. He worked with five county judges, including former Governor Paul Patton and Wayne Rutherford, before retiring in 1998. He was also an independent flood insurance adjustor before retiring again in 2010. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by one brother; Richard Anderson Velat of High Point, N.C. Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years; Linda Johnson Anderson of Johnson Lane, Virgie, one daughter; Rebecca (Dwayne) Ratliff of Caney Highway, two granddaughters; Elizabeth Johnson (Jesse) Lucas of Shelby Gap, Sophie Ratliff of Caney Highway, one grandson; Jordan Ratliff of Caney Highway, one great-grandson; Noah Eugene Lucas of Shelby Gap, one sister; Barbara (Danny) Woods of Danbury, N.C., one sister-in-law; Patricia Velat of Jamestown, N.C., two brothers-in-law; Philip (Glenda) Johnson of Virgie, William M. ((Glenna Jo ) Johnson of Pikeville, six sisters-in-law; Peggy (Nick) Braden of Houston, TX., Shirley (Odell) Owens of Bristol, VA., Colleen (James) Clay of Virgie, Glenda (Richard) Easterling of Greensboro, N.C., Gloria (Barry) Johns of Robinson Creek, Lavonne (Rodney) Tackett of Virgie. Along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandparent and will always be in our hearts. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Hall & Jones Funeral Home with Bill Blackburn officiating. Singing by the Virgie Baptist Choir, led by Gail Blackburn. Burial will follow in the Johnson Memorial Park at Pikeville. Visitation will be held on Sunday 6:00-8: 00PM at the Funeral Home.
